Leinster Branch Blitz Wanderers RFC - 2nd XV

05 October 2003

Ressurected like a Phoenix from the ashes the Stillorgan RFC seconds team assembled for battle in October for the first time in many a year. For those of a suspicious nature and a long memory there were murmours as the Minister of Justice watched us gather, surely Wanderers were taking this a bit too far! Undeterred we went to tog out with the words of team manager Fergus "Psycho" Cahill ringing in our ears " right lads.. you're on your own". Our first match was against Wesley's J3 which was highlighted by Hops' worm killer of a kick off.

Although the team comprised 5 lads who had never played contact rugby before we managed to hold them scoreless for 15 minutes thanks to wonderful defending by everybody. Wesley eventually ran out winners by 3 trys to nil. The 2nd match was against Wanderers where we had to play against a strong wind for the full 20 minutes. Yet again the game was a whole-hearted effort from all 17 players on the panel but it just wasn't good enough against a more experienced Wanderers side . The 3rd match was against Railway Union and again the team battled until the end and were unlucky not to score a try at the death. I have deliberately not mentioned individuals (with the exception of Hops) because as I said before we went out to play. "We play as a team and we win, lose or draw as a team". Suffice to say that everybody did themselves and the club proud.
