Stillorgan 7 - Wanderers 6

Friendly - Feb 21, 2004

A good win for the slow starters from Stillorgan. Good to get back to winning ways as we entered the silly season this weekend in the rugby calendar with more pints drank than trys scored. Stillorgan found themselves six-nil down in the first after a poor perfromance in the opening 30 minutes but turned the screw in the latter stages and were unlucky not to score a try in the corner.

We started strongly in the 2nd half and pushed hard for a well deserved try which eventually came on the back of some good driving from the forwards and was relesed to the backs with the comeback kid himself Conor Geaney scoring close to the posts. This was to be last score in the game. With 20 minutes to go from here Stillorgan defended well and came close to scoring again with a super block down on the Wanderers line from Rossie which was touched down by a Wanderers player at the last moment. SRFC were to be lucky themselves when Wanderers kicked through our defence and touched down one yard past the dead ball line. Well done groundsman. The last 10 minutes were spent camped on our line with super tackling from everyone and a number of important turnovers to ensure victory.

Men of the match were Danny Shanahan in the forwards and Mattie Drake in the backs.

On the social side there was reports of a strong Stillorgan gathering in Flannerys on Saturday. Details are loose on this one so if anyone can enlighten me. A good SRFC representation was also to be seen in none other than Slatterys after the Irish game and was still going at 12 last nite.
