Stillorgan 14 - Wanderers 0

J3 League - Jan 23, 2005

Despite the Siberian chill in the air, Stillorgan took to the field against Wanderers in pursuit of our fifth consecutive league victory this season. With the going 'heavy' up the middle of the field, it was obvious from the outset that this game would be more suited to 12 year old chasers than 2 year old milers but the Stillorgan thoroughbreds were undeterred.

Stillorgan won the toss and elected to play into the south goal. Only 5 minutes had passed when Paul 'white shorts' Fadden received a dead leg which he tried to run off but was replaced a few minutes later by Octavio. Stillorgan pressed on and after 20 minutes, a good backline move from 15m out saw Patrick split the Wanderers midfield to score under the posts. The try was converted by Patrick.

From the resulting restart, Nigel caught the short kick on the full and took off down the sideline like a wild bull through the streets of Pamplona in July. The fury was eventually brought to ground close to the 22 but Stillorgan failed to capitalise on Nigel's gallop. Half-time arrived with the score remaining at 7-0.

With everyone accounted for, the half-time water was passed around and words of wisdom imparted from the sideline.

The second half began with Wanderers having most of the possession but never really getting beyond our 10m line. We did however give away a penalty around 15 minutes into the half which Wanderers decided to kick. Luckily for us, the kicked sailed wide. This would be the last time Wanderers got near the Stillorgan line. From the 22 dropout, Stillorgan marched down the field and after a couple of gangly stampedes by Donncha, Danny eventually flopped over the line to score Stillorgan's second try of the game.

Wanderer's were not impressed by the ref's decision to award the try but as the video ref had his camera in his pocket at the time, we'll just have to assume that the ref saw the ball being 'grounded'. From 10m in from the line, Patrick once again converted. At 14-0 up in these conditions Wanderers were never going to get back into the game despite having the majority of the possession.

Once again good performances all round but Man of the Match goes to Donncha for his wild (and mis-directed) stampedes with ball in hand during the second half.
