Moran Cup 1st Round - Mar 30, 2008
A good win for the organ yesterday, much improved from last week but still a lot of work needed before we face Marys in the quarters. We scored 3 tries in the first half from dominant forward play.
Some storming running from Baby shanahan saw him score our first and some neat rinky dinly moves in the backs saw liam over underneath the posts. For some reason the posts moved and the conversion hit the post. moles in bird avenue must be a problem, must get pops to look into that one. Ross Durnin scored our third from good pick and go play from the forwards which eventually broke through the trinners defence and was converted well by liam to leave us 17 nil up at half time.
The second half saw us take our foot off the gas a little with missed tackles etc, we let trinners for winners back into the game when they scored a very good try from half way.
However, Moment of the match then happened in the last play of the game. well you know the saying - "save the best to last". A poor garryowen by trinity in their own 22 sailed across the pitch and who was under it only the self less shanahans. Who passed it to each other with "not the garrett" speeding up behind them screaming for the ball. The baby shanahan passed to the daddy shanahan who passed to “not the garrett”. With the wind, the help of god and sheer class carrying him through “not the garrett” downed in the corner to score an outstanding try one of the best ever witnessed by the swells of fans in bird avenue.
Positives
Some fine scrummaging from the pack, the like i have never seen, legends such as phil orr, peter clohessy and garrett fanning would have been proud. The backs were horrendous no lines, no tackles, no tries, no nothing. If only Garret was there. (All jokes just in case any one is sensitive and needs to book into a shrink) All joking aside, I think it is fair to say 1-22 we need to up it big style for Marys next week. Line out much improved. Couldn’t comment on the backs but there were some good moves up until the last pass which we forced a little sometimes. Also we are scoring tries again. Pick and Go.
Areas for improvement
Scrum was strong for most of the game but we did loose a couple against the head without being pushed off it so we need to make sure of those ones as they tend to be the crucial ones. First time tackles were poor. This is really important for next week. Stop forcing the off load and last pass – need to take into contact and secure it.
